The Sakhi Collaboration in keeping with its theme of ‘Spreading Love’ in 2011 launches its campaign to mark International Day Against Homophobia.
The International Day Against Homophobia is an annual thematic event that unifies LGBT people and the people who love them all over the world. This week we invite all Citizens from all walks of life to reflect on homophobia and its devastating effects.
May 17th is symbolic due to its significance in improving the status of gays and lesbians. In removing homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses on a May 17 1990, the World Health Organisation (WHO) put an end to over a century of homophobia in the medical field. IDAHO (Internatioanl Day against Homophobia ) organization proposed this date for annually holding a day set aside to fight homophobia. The Declaration of Montréal (July 29, 2006), borne out of the International Conference on LGBT Rights that preceded the first World Outgames, recommended the worldwide recognition of an International Day Against Homophobia on May 17 of each year.
Why is the International Day Against Homophobia so important?
Like other forms of discrimination and intolerance such as racism, sexism or anti-Semitism, homophobia has devastating, repercussions for its victims. The suicide rate among young gays is much higher than with their heterosexual peers, a great number of gays, lesbians and bisexuals live in secret and in fear of rejection, and transgendered and transsexual persons still live on the fringe of society.
For most LGBT people Homophobia is a daily reality and takes many forms and shapes. Sometimes as obvious as a verbal insult or a physical attack to more subtle and disguised, discrimination such as exclusion form family events or denial of positions of authority.
Long term effects of such sustained and repeated negativity contributes to an ‘internalised homophobia’ making it difficult for some LGBT persons to accept and live a sexual orientation that is different from that of the majority, affecting their ability to live happy fulfilled lives. With laws that criminalize Homosexuality such as Article 365/365A of the Sri Lankan penal code, social equality among all citizens regardless of the sexual orientation or sexual identity remains to be achieved.
Despite these dire situations, the implementation of the International Day Against Homophobia should not rest on a ‘victimisation’ philosophy. In fact, the Day may be seen as a great opportunity to highlight positive aspects of homosexuality and celebrate the contribution of LGBT persons to society.
*** We invite you to display these posters or any other message that draws attention to the International Day Against Homophobia on the 17th of May 2011.
